The town particularly likes to mention Emilys failure to net income taxes, which emphasizes her settlement on patriarchal guidance. It also makes her seem bantam and greedy, as if she does not motive to contribute to the well-being of the town. so far the reader never learns Emilys side of the story. After her father dies, Emily ostensibly relies all told upon Colonel Sartoris, the mayor, to protect her from the town. The modern generation of the town, however, sneers at upholding Emily as some kind of hereditary obligation (Faulkner 122). They see her not as some helpless maiden, but rather individual who full capable of paying taxes.
